About Me

Yen Ospina is a Colombian-American self-taught artist who blends traditional and digital mediums to create works rich in storytelling and cultural resonance. Drawing inspiration from folklore, etching, and lithographs, Yen's digital pieces offer a unique twist—each one layered with narratives that inspire her. Her signature style incorporates saturated earth tones, making her work instantly recognizable and deeply rooted in a vibrant cultural identity.

In her traditional abstract paintings, Yen shifts focus inward, using the medium to express personal emotions and introspection, contrasting the storytelling nature of her digital work. This duality allows her to explore both the external world of culture and mythology and the internal world of emotion and self-reflection.

In addition to her studio work, Yen is an accomplished muralist, having painted over seven murals throughout the Ithaca area. Beyond her artistic practice, Yen is dedicated to uplifting marginalized voices. Through her nomadic Orozco Gallery, she curates exhibitions that center BIPOC artists, providing a platform for emerging talent. As the newly appointed president of the Latino Civic Association, Yen is passionate about creating community events that support and celebrate the Hispanic/Latine community in Tompkins County.

Yen's artistic journey began in 2013 with traditional painting, and by 2020 she had taught herself digital art. In January 2022, Yen made the bold leap to become a full-time artist, fully embracing the life of creative exploration, community-building, and cultural storytelling.

News & Collaborations

Sold 5 Paintings!

I’m beyond thrilled to share some exciting news—I’ve sold five of my paintings in 2025! Knowing that my traditional works have found their forever homes fills me with so much joy and gratitude. From my recent series Fragments of Becoming (2025), the pieces Cicatriz, Resurgir, Vestigio, and Cauce Profundo have all been collected. Each of these works explores themes of healing, growth, and self-discovery through abstract mixed media. Inspired by my own experiences of resilience and renewal, this series embraces imperfection as a form of beauty, weaving together a visual narrative of transformation and becoming.

Alongside these, I also sold Vulnerability, one of my absolute favorite pieces from my very first abstract series Fluida Vida (2023). That series marked the beginning of my journey into abstraction, and seeing Vulnerability go to a loving home feels especially meaningful.

There are still pieces available from both series, and if you’re interested in collecting one, you can view them here. To dive deeper into the inspiration and story behind each collection, you can learn more here.

I feel so lucky that I get to share my inner world through both traditional and digital art. Every painting carries a part of me, and knowing they now live with people who connect with them is an indescribable feeling. Thank you for supporting my work, my voice, and this ongoing journey of creation and self-expression.

Orozco Gallery Pop Up Space | 2025

Collaboration w/ Cornell - Rural Humanities Grant | 2025

In May 2025, Orozco Gallery transformed 115 S Cayuga Street into a month-long pop-up that celebrated creativity, culture, and connection. Curated by local artist and activist Yen Ospina, the gallery became a lively hub where art was not only displayed but lived and shared. With over 25 events and hundreds of attendees, it offered an inclusive space for joy, dialogue, and healing.

Programming was intentionally diverse—ranging from bilingual Spanish Story Time, Afro-Cuban and Bossa Nova sets, and Colombian dance, to puppet theatre, zine-making, and Sip & Paint nights. Workshops and talks with BIPOC creators opened space for vulnerability, storytelling, and shared inspiration.

The gallery’s ethos centered accessibility: a sober environment with mocktails and aguas frescas, sliding-scale admission, and events for all ages. Supported by the Latino Civic Association, Cornell’s Einhorn Center, the Rural Humanities Grant, and others, the initiative concluded with a heartfelt closing reception and dance party. Though temporary, Orozco Gallery left a lasting imprint, reminding Ithaca what can be built when art and community intersect.

Praxis Gallery Group Exhibition | 2025

The opening of Sister Outsider at Praxis Gallery in Binghamton was an unforgettable evening filled with powerful art and community connection. Featuring work by @loveonartwork, @ghostoverhuman, and myself, the exhibit centers immersive installations that explore themes of waywardness, transformation, and the impact of social issues on women’s lives.

The turnout was fantastic, and I’m deeply grateful for the thoughtful feedback I received on my new pieces from Fragments of Becoming. It’s always a joy to be part of a group exhibition—there’s something truly inspiring about seeing how different artists approach similar themes from distinct perspectives. Sister Outsider continues Praxis Gallery’s commitment to cross-disciplinary art forms and socially engaged ideas, creating a space where dialogue and creative expression thrive. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend visiting and experiencing the work in person—each piece invites you into a layered, emotional, and transformative world.

Collaboration w/ KC Potter Center - Vanderbilt University | 2025

In March 2024, I was invited by the KC Potter Center at Vanderbilt University to curate a group BIPOC & Queer exhibition, an opportunity that allowed me to expand my work beyond New York. This exhibition highlighted the intersection of identity, culture, and artistic expression, providing a platform for underrepresented voices within the queer and BIPOC communities.

Alongside curating the show, I led artist talks, fostering meaningful conversations about representation, resilience, and the power of storytelling through art. Engaging with a new audience in a different region reinforced the importance of these spaces, and I am proud to continue expanding my curatorial work to institutions and communities beyond the Finger Lakes.

This experience reaffirmed my commitment to creating inclusive and empowering exhibitions, ensuring that BIPOC and Queer artists have platforms to share their stories, not just in New York, but wherever art can be a catalyst for change.

Fragments Of Becoming | 2025

Fragments of Becoming: A Meditation on Transformation

In my third series of abstract work, Fragments of Becoming, I explore the quiet weight of transformation—the way life’s fractures, both seen and unseen, unravel the familiar yet offer the raw material for something new to emerge. This collection unfolds as a meditation on healing, resilience, and the beauty found in imperfection.

Through layered pigments, fluid movement, and intricate embroidery, I trace the nonlinear paths of becoming. Each piece began as a foundation of chaos—unstructured layers of acrylic paint, pigments, and alcohol inks—echoing moments of uncertainty. Stitched threads wind across the surface, marking the labor of repair, while textures invite the eye to follow their course, pausing at spaces of clarity and connection.

Teaching myself embroidery for this series was an act of patience and trust—trial and error guiding my hands until the thread felt like second nature. Each stitch, an intention. Each knot, a lesson. Every fiber woven into these works holds a piece of that journey.

I invite you to step into these spaces with me. To trace the paths of transformation. To find yourself in the fractures and the mending.

The ten works in this series are:

✨ Umbral - Threshold
Metamorfosis - Metamorphosis
Vestigio - Trace, footprint of the past
Sombra y Luz - Shadow and light
Resurgir - To Rise Again
Entre Hilos y Sombras - Between Threads and Shadows
Camino Incierto - Uncertain Path
Cicatriz - Scar
Cauce Profundo - Deep current
Verdad Intima - Intimate Truth

Zine Workshop w/ Ithaca Highschool Students

I had the rewarding opportunity to lead a zine-making workshop with three different classes at Ithaca High School, where I introduced students to the creative process of crafting their own zines. Watching their enthusiasm grow as they explored personal expression through collage, writing, and illustration was incredibly fulfilling. It was inspiring to see them embrace the medium, each creating unique works that reflected their individual voices. Teaching them this new skill not only empowered them to express themselves but also reinforced my belief in the transformative power of art education. The experience was truly a highlight in my journey as an artist and educator.

Guest Speaker at Cornell University | 2024

I had the honor of being invited by Debra Castillo as a guest speaker to explore the intersections of art, activism, and culture in Ithaca. I discussed how the Hispanic/Latine community contributes to the city’s cultural landscape and how art fosters dialogue and understanding. These conversations highlight the power of activism, cross-cultural exchange, and storytelling in shaping Ithaca’s identity.

As president of the Latino Civic Association, I shared our role in advocating for and empowering the community through cultural and civic engagement. From outreach programs to events celebrating history, our work strengthens inclusivity and uplifts diverse voices. It was an opportunity to emphasize the importance of preserving cultural spaces and honoring traditions through collaborative activism.

"Surrealismo De Ensueños”
July 2024

In my second series of abstract work, I delve into the expansive realm of dreams, navigating surreal landscapes and untethered imagination that our minds weave during nightly voyages. This collection unfolds as a visual odyssey into the enigmatic and often whimsical nature of our subconscious, celebrating the liberating essence of dreams.

Through a deliberate ritual, I surrender to sleep with meticulously selected melodies, allowing myself to drift into realms beyond the mundane day. Over the past six months, visions have unfolded amidst these recurring songs, inviting lucid dreams to manifest ephemeral places and fleeting images.

I invite you to share in the emotions that stirred within me as these creations took form. A curated playlist awaits on YouTube and Spotify; simply scan the QR code to let the sequence of songs guide you through paintings labeled Sueño I to Sueño X. May you absorb the essence of my journey, experiencing the depth that resonated within me during their creation.

Activist Speaker in Arts & Community
2023-PRESENT

In 2023, I had the privilege of speaking at Ithaca High School, discussing the intersection of activism, community events, and art. Engaging with students, I highlighted how art can be a powerful tool for social change.

Now, as part of Social Justice Week, I continue this mission—raising awareness about the tangible impact artists can make. Through storytelling and shared experiences, I encourage students to embrace their creativity as a force for advocacy and change.

These conversations explore how artists can contribute to social movements, foster dialogue, and build empathy. My goal is to inspire students to recognize their potential as artists and community advocates, using their work to create a more just and compassionate society.

Every brushstroke, every creative act, carries the power to ignite change. Together, we shape a future where art is not just expression but a catalyst for meaningful transformation

"Fluida Vida" Abstract Series

January 2023

Art Statement of Fluida Vida Show by Yen Ospina
I have always been an artist. But it wasn’t until 2020 during the lock-down that I finally allowed myself to truly become one. What was stopping me before then? What stifled my expression? Why didn’t I believe I could do this sooner? These questions and sensations, the process of confronting myself and the truth of my being in this life are what I have sought to explore and address in this series. The title Fluida Vida (Fluid Life) reflects the constant shifts and changes that we experience in life. My hope is that this deeply personal exploration that takes place in abstract mixed media allows you, the viewer, to connect on a visceral level - beyond the words we have, in the field of emotions that have no name; that can only be felt in those secret spaces of the soul.

Through a series of abstract mixed media paint collages on canvas, I bring pieces of self that feel disparate into a unified whole. For me, this relates to the impact of the “American Dream”  being internalized by my immigrant parents and the expectations placed on me as a child. Before I was ever conceived, it was their fierce love for the idea of me and their dreams for what their children could be in the United States that pulled my parents across borders to a strange land of possibility. I admire their tenacity deeply. Everything I am, and all that I will become began with their love and bravery to face the unknown. Growing up, I felt pulled in what felt like two different directions. Being caught between two worlds, two ways of being, Colombian, American, never enough of one and always too much of the other  - in a way this creates an unresolvable impasse, in another way: I am forged as something new. It became my purpose to live as my full and authentic self. This has meant becoming an artist in spite of the expectations of my parents, and overall unlearning of their fears, inhibitions, and beliefs that are not my own. Breaking generational trauma as a first generation Latinx American has allowed me to embody who I am and become the woman of my dreams. I can think of no better way to offer my story than through my art.

I have used a combination of oil, alcohol, acrylic, ink, and mod podge on several canvases to express the internal journey of growth, perseverance and acceptance I have undergone while belonging to two distinct cultures. Each canvas is representative of a large moment of my life: acceptance, vulnerability, manipulation, abuse, expectation, defeat, valor, empathy, rage, and devotion. I chose each color, tone and hue to represent the embodiment of my experiences. By creating layers of lush color in abstract blooms of pigment, I aim to convey a universal experience of welling emotions for which words are inadequate. While I am describing my personal evolution, these pieces are completed by the unique internal landscape of each viewer; our silent dialogue. It is my hope that by showing up vulnerably, you will feel not only that you better know me, but also that you will receive the invitation to be vulnerable yourself.

My own battles may well continue, but I’ve turned the tide of progress to my favor, and that feels very aligned and worth celebrating! Thank you for being here and supporting my journey as an artist and as a fully realized human being.

Founder of Orozco Gallery Ithaca

January 2024 – Present

In January 2024, I envisioned a space where emerging artists could thrive—one that extended beyond my personal identity to create meaningful opportunities. That vision became Orozco Gallery, an independent initiative dedicated to uplifting artists in the Finger Lakes.

The name Orozco is deeply personal, representing a connection to my heritage and an alternate facet of my artistic journey. Through this gallery, I aim to provide a platform for underrepresented artists, curating dynamic exhibitions that highlight diverse perspectives.

Orozco Gallery is a one-person labor of love, but its impact reaches far beyond. My goal is to foster a community-driven space that champions creativity, ensuring that new voices in the art world are seen, heard, and celebrated.

Hispanic & Latine Exhibition Curator

October 2023 – Present

In October 2023, I curated my first Hispanic & Latine group exhibition in collaboration with the Latino Civic Association, an experience that ignited my passion for showcasing artists within 100 miles of Ithaca, NY. Seeing the impact of this platform, I committed to making it an annual event.

Each year, this exhibition amplifies the voices of Hispanic & Latine artists, providing them with a space to share their stories and cultural narratives. It is more than just an exhibition—it is a celebration of identity, resilience, and creative expression.

Organizer & Curator of Present Conversations

June 2023 – Present

In June 2023, I curated the first Present Conversations exhibition, a BIPOC group show that drew over 400 attendees on opening night. Witnessing the overwhelming response, I knew this had to become an annual tradition.

Each year, Present Conversations highlights over 14 artists, creating a space for dialogue, representation, and community engagement. In 2024, I expanded the exhibition to include artist talks, giving the audience a deeper understanding of the inspirations and stories behind the works.

This exhibition continues to be a testament to the power of visibility and connection, fostering opportunities for BIPOC artists to share their artistry with the world.

Curator & Speaker – KC Potter Center, Vanderbilt University

March 2024

Orozco Gallery Reimagines Space, Culture, and Community Through a Month-Long Pop-Up Series in Downtown Ithaca

Ithaca, NY – May 2025

In a time when our communities crave connection, celebration, and healing, Orozco Gallery emerged this May as a sanctuary for creativity, culture, and collective joy. Located at 115 S Cayuga Street in the heart of Downtown Ithaca, this month-long pop-up gallery and event series brought a powerful vision to life: to create a space where art doesn’t just hang on walls, but lives, breathes, and gathers people across generations, languages, and lived experiences.

Curated and organized by local artist, community leader, and activist Yen Ospina, Orozco Gallery became a vibrant hub of activity, dialogue, and movement. What began as a temporary gallery quickly grew into a deeply meaningful experiment in community-building. Through a robust calendar of over 25 unique events, the gallery welcomed hundreds of people throughout the month—offering something for everyone, from live music and dance, to bilingual story times, artist-led workshops, puppet shows, and late-night dance parties.

A Full Month of Art and Action

The opening reception on May 2nd set the tone for what was to come: an atmosphere filled with warmth, non-alcoholic refreshments, and food lovingly provided by Jojo Cook. From there, the gallery hosted a mix of immersive, interactive events that encouraged visitors not just to observe, but to participate.

Spanish Story Time sessions invited children and families to sit together on rugs while being transported into magical worlds through language and projected illustrations. The bilingual format created an inclusive, cross-cultural space that resonated deeply with attendees.

Live music performances, such as the Venissa Santi Trio’s Afro-Cuban set and an intimate Bossa Nova jazz evening, transformed the gallery into a listening room where community members could experience the power of music in a sober, accessible setting.

Workshops and artist talks became the beating heart of the month. Dozens of local and regional BIPOC artists—including Gabriella Evergreen, Luna Fiber, Sarah Lopez, Bevi Wallenstein, Yessica Martinez, Pilar Gutierrez, and more—shared their processes, inspirations, and personal stories. These evenings were tender, illuminating, and at times emotionally charged, creating room for vulnerability and shared understanding.

The gallery also partnered with performers like Lizzy Fajardo, who taught a joyful Colombian rueda dance class, and Lilypad Puppet Theatre, which brought “Alfonso’s Story” to life for a room full of captivated children and families. The event was performed primarily in Spanish, underscoring the gallery’s mission to uplift voices and narratives that are too often left out of dominant cultural spaces.

Other crowd favorites included the Sip & Paint night, where participants explored color theory while interpreting Bob Ross’s iconic landscapes in their own styles, and the Zine Workshop, where scissors, glue sticks, and imagination collided in a celebration of DIY storytelling.

The month concluded with a warm and emotional closing reception on May 30th, followed by a final dance party led by aparece that pulsed with joy, music, and laughter—a fitting finale to a space that had become a temporary but transformational home for many.

A Vision Beyond the Gallery Walls

What made the Orozco Gallery initiative truly special wasn’t just the volume of events—it was the intentionality behind every decision. From prioritizing a sober space (where mocktails and aguas frescas replaced alcohol) to offering sliding scale admission to ensure accessibility, the gallery’s framework challenged traditional models of how art is experienced and who gets to experience it.

Behind it all was the dedicated leadership of Yen Ospina, whose vision for the space extended beyond aesthetics. Her commitment to creating opportunities for underrepresented artists, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, and offering alternatives to alcohol-centered nightlife shaped every corner of the pop-up gallery.

This effort was deeply community-driven and made possible with the collaboration and support of the Latino Civic Association, as well as institutional partners such as Cornell’s Einhorn Center for Community Engagement, the Rural Humanities Grant, the Emerson Hinchliff Chair, and the Latina/o Studies Program. Their contributions helped sustain this bold experiment in grassroots organizing, cultural celebration, and radical imagination.

Looking Forward

As the artwork came down and the space returned to its former emptiness, what remained was the echo of stories shared, songs sung, connections formed, and dreams planted. The Orozco Gallery pop-up may have been temporary, but its impact will ripple forward in the hearts and minds of everyone who passed through its doors.

In a time when so many systems feel broken, Orozco Gallery reminded us of what we can build when we come together—with open hands, open hearts, and the courage to imagine something different.
