Soft Systems 2027 | Series IV

Soft Systems explores mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion as a sustained condition rather than a singular breaking point. Created while navigating the realities of artistic labor—maintaining income through markets, projects, and continuous production—this series reflects the tension between survival within structured systems and a longing for slow, intentional living.

The work brings together painting and fiber as parallel forms of labor and care. Layered acrylic washes, pigments, and reworked surfaces mirror cycles of effort, depletion, and return. Fiber elements emerge through hand-stitching, knotting, and mending—gestures that hold, repair, and interrupt the painted surface without resolving it. Threads remain visible and imperfect, acknowledging maintenance as an ongoing act rather than a completed task.

Slowness is central to this process. The physical act of stitching deliberately slows my body and pace, creating space to regulate, reflect, and resist urgency. Through making these pieces, I am reminded why I create something out of nothing in the first place—not to meet constant demands, but to stay connected to care, presence, and meaning.

Soft Systems does not offer resolution. Instead, it exists within the in-between: where softness persists inside rigid structures, where care coexists with labor, and where continuing becomes both necessity and quiet resistance.

Fragments of Becoming 2025 | Series 111

Fragments of Becoming explores healing, growth, and self-discovery through abstract mixed media. Drawing from personal experiences of resilience and renewal, this series embraces imperfection as beauty, weaving a visual narrative of transformation.

Each piece begins with fluid, unstructured layers—acrylic paint, pigments, and alcohol inks—evoking moments of chaos and uncertainty. As compositions evolve, stitched threads emerge, tracing paths of repair and connection. The threads follow winding, imperfect routes, reflecting the nonlinear journey of healing.

The stitched threads are central, symbolizing both rupture and repair. Each stitch is an act of care, a labor of mending. Together, these elements create textured landscapes that invite contemplation.

Viewers are encouraged to follow the threads, tracing their movement across the canvas and pausing at the layers beneath. The interplay of color and texture asks: Where do our paths of repair lead? How do our experiences shape who we are becoming?

This series does not seek tidy resolutions. Instead, it honors the strength found in embracing the unfinished. Each work is an invitation to see beauty in vulnerability and recognize that transformation—though imperfect—is inherently meaningful.

Fragments of Becoming is a testament to resilience, celebrating the fragments that shape us and the journey of becoming.

Fluida Vida 2023 | Series 1

Fluida Vida (Fluid Life) is a journey of self-realization and growth, distilled into a series of abstract mixed media collages that express my exploration of identity, belonging, and resilience. This series reflects the internal confrontations I’ve faced in fully embracing the artist I was always meant to be—a journey sparked in 2020, during the quiet upheaval of the lockdown. Growing up as a first-generation Latinx American, I was shaped by the “American Dream” my immigrant parents believed in, and by the love, courage, and expectations that came with it. This duality—being both Colombian and American—was sometimes a challenging space between worlds, yet it also became fertile ground for forging my unique path. Through layers of oil, acrylic, ink, and collage on canvas, I translate my own internal landscape into textures, colors, and abstract forms, evoking feelings of vulnerability, strength, and acceptance. My hope is that viewers find connection here, allowing these layers of color and emotion to resonate with their own unspoken stories, and to inspire courage and openness within them as well.
